Terribly sad that it has come to this after I got so much from twitter over the years. But I'm not prepared to participate in Musk's nonsense.

@cobra_winfrey Yes. I trust Cassie completely. But on this occasion I didn’t need to base anything just on trust. I’ve heard accounts directly from many speakers for the event that tally. And they fit with my own experience.

My friends, Cassie and Jo, have shown courage by being among the first to speak publicly about this.

I only quietly withdrew from this event, so I did not get challenged online. I wish I had listened to my instincts and the accounts of countless other speakers sooner.

@piccalilli_ @SaraSoueidan I myself did not bow out until late because, despite my instincts, I wanted this to succeed. And had I been travelling or been committed financially, I might have participated. During the event, more details have surfaced, but the speakers did not do this.

@piccalilli_ @SaraSoueidan With all respect, I don't think that's quite fair. I'm not sure we should demonise people for sharing that they are speaking / attending.

Making a commitment to travel and speak and then sticking to that in spite of the event unravelling is not, in my view, being complicit.

@ThisIsJoFrank I agreed to drop my fee after being told that this event provides financial support to its sibling event (https://techknowday.com) which is focussed on giving a platform to women in tech. In the light of all I've heard, I'd worry about the experience for speakers at that event

@ThisIsJoFrank I myself stepped back from MC-ing at this when I failed to get enough info or confidence in the event.

I did so quietly since I didn't want to undermine speakers who were still committed, but I do think it's important to share cautionary info like this to avoid future troubles.

It seems that these are indeed private (not to be confused with secure), but the UI on different instances do not all make this equally clear.

@DasSurma I’m thinking it is, but under heavy load at the moment. I’d take nothing for granted, but also not give up hope.

@DasSurma Mine took 26 hours. But I've heard stories of people getting theirs after 6 days.
