BT’s SDK team have some goodies up their sleeves

July 21st, 2007

Over the last couple of days I have got to meet some members of the BT SDK team. I’m likely to be working quite closely with some of these guys over the coming months in my role at Osmosoft and so it was great to get to meet them and see how they work.

There is a great feeling of energy and enthusiasm in the team, which I found infectious. I personally am rather excited about getting the chance to play with some of the cool features of the BT SDK to build some funky web apps. As a newcomer to the telecoms sector, I find that the functionality being exposed through the SDK are inspiring me to build all kinds of gizmos, widgets, gadget, and do-hickies. I’ll be shouting about some of those here soon, no doubt.

..but I find myself wondering, what would you build?

With the ability to create phone calls, conference calls, send and receive text messages, detect caller locations, and lots more, my mind is spinning with the possibilities for web apps and mash-ups. A senior member of the BT SDK team tells me that there are some really cool new features on the way. I’ll press further for exactly what those will be and when we can expect to see them arrive, but in the meantime, I’d love to hear what kind of things people would want to make, or see someone else make from this kind of train-set!

Fellow Osmosoftian, Simon MacMannus recently started tinkering with the SDK to grab a caller’s location and display it using google maps. He blogged about his findings on his site. I’m sure that there will be some cool uses of this kind of thing popping up as handsets get more sophisticated cough iPhone cough and can run applications like Google Maps in more useful shapes and sizes.
